Tails Monero Wallet Installation and Benefits

Tails is the most secure, censorship resistant operating system. Monero is the most private, fungible cryptocurrency. Tails Wallet is the most secure and private cryptocurrency wallet.

The synergies between these 3 projects are obvious. That is why we created the Tails Monero Wallet. A privacy-focused monero wallet specifically created to run on the most secure Tails OS. Specifically designed for the needs of Tails OS users the Tails Monero Wallet offers multiple cryptocurrencies, link directory, and coin exchange / swapping.

How to install Monero Wallet for Tails?

Downloading Tails Monero Wallet and running the AppImage is all you need to do in order install a Monero for Tails. This process is completed with a few mouse clicks. In addition to Monero you can also use other cryptocurrencies like ZCash, Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc. In addition to Tails, you can run the wallet on Linux / Windows and gain more privacy and security.

Does the Tails Monero wallet use Tor network?
Yes, absolutely. Every connection is performed over Tor. This ensures maximum privacy and censorship resistance.
How does the Monero Wallet for Tails handle node selection?

Node selection is extremely important in order to maintain privacy with Monero. By running malicious nodes it is possible to learn about Monero users and potentially de-anonymize them. For example, pretend you are connected to a specific node. You then create a transaction and it is broadcasted through this node. This node will know that you created this specific transaction, so it knows your IP address is associated with it's inputs and potentially it's outputs.

The way to defeat this meta-analysis that reduces this is the following strategies. Tails Monero Wallet is the only wallet that uses every advanced node selection strategy:

  • Use Tor - utilizing Tor reduces the correlation greatly and is the primary defence against this meta analysis.
  • Always Use New Nodes - require using a different node for every transaction. This way no individual node is familiar with every transaction you broadcast. Tails Monero Wallet enforces a new unique node for every transaction sent.
  • Don't Limit Node Selection - some wallets (like feather for example) reduce node selection to a pool of 10 or so nodes. This means the same 10 nodes always see your transaction broadcasts. Tails Monero Wallet randomly selects from all available nodes (150+) which means there would have to be a lot of collusion in order to see your entire broadcast graph.
Tails Monero Wallets is the only wallet to support Monero Churning

Monero Churning is the process of increasing Monero privacy guarantees. Monero only has an anonymity set of less than 16 per transaction. True anonymity set is likely less than 8 due to various issues such as exchanges sharing output information, Black Marble Spam Attacks, wallets such as MyMonero that unreveal outputes, etc

An anonymity set of 8 is not very good and has privacy consequences for users. As a result Tails Monero Wallet created a way to expand the anonymity set through a process called Monero churning. Essentially, this is the process of creating transactions in a non-predictable way to expand the anonymity set.

Tails Litecoin Wallet Installation and Benefits

Tails Litecoin Wallet brings full support Litecoin to the Tails OS. Tails Wallet is a community project that makes it easier to hold, exchange, and use various cryptocurrencies on the Tails / Linux / Windows platforms. Tails Litecoin Wallet brings privacy and security values of the Tails project to the Litecoin network. Many Tails users like to use Litecoin as an alternative to Bitcoin because it has much lower fees.

How to install Litecoin Wallet for Tails?

Downloading Tails Litecoin Wallet and running the AppImage is all you need to do in order install a Litecoin Wallet for Tails. This process is completed with a few mouse clicks. In addition to Litecoin you can also use other cryptocurrencies like ZCash, Monero, Ethereum. In addition to Tails, you can run the wallet on Linux / Windows and gain more privacy and security.

What features does the Tails Litecoin Wallet have?
  • Tor Network - All connections are performed over Tor Onion Network which ensures maximum privacy and anonymity.
  • Smart Node Selection - Node selection is performed intelligently to reduce the amount of data shared with remote nodes.
  • Intelligent Fee Handling - Always pay the lowest fees possible. Fees on the Litecoin network are generally a few cents or less.
  • Multiple Crypto Support - Also has support for Monero, Zcash, Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum, etc
  • Exchange / Swap Litecoin - Easier exchange between Monero and Litecoin and over 700 other cryptocurrency pairs.
  • No Blockchain Download - Tails Litecoin Wallet does not require downloading the entire blockchain, so it is very fast to get started.
Litecoin as an alternative to Bitcoin high fees?

Bitcoin fees are higher every day. Many Tails users actually use cryptocurrency to transact and do not hold the currency for long. In this situation Litecoin is a good alternative to Bitcoin. Litecoin fees are much lower. Tails Litecoin Wallet enables you to swap between Litecoin and any other currency. For example, you can swap Litecoin for Monero or Bitcoin for Litecoin, etc.

Many users buy Bitcoin because they want to swap it for Monero. The problem with this are the Bitcoin fees. As an alternative you can buy Litecoin and swap it for Monero inside of the Tails Litecoin Wallet. This will save overall fees.

Tails OS released and Tails Crypto Wallet support

Tails OS new major version has been released! Tails is a operating system dedicating to protecting users from censorship and surveillance. Tails Wallet is a wallet built for Tails OS that has the same values. This release of Tails has a lot of improvements for users. Some of them are outlined below:

  • Persistent Storage Error Detection - Persistent Storage is the feature that enables you to keep data between Tails boots. The new error detection capability will alert you if your persistent storage may be facing hardware issues. This is important since Tails is often run from less reliable USB hardware.
  • Automatic Mounting - As a convenience external storage disks will now be mounted automatically and you will be asked for a password if they are encrypted.
  • Selective Mounting - Automatic mounting comes with security tradeoffs. Devices that are plugged in while your lockscreen is activated will be ignored in order to reduce any security concerns.
  • Dark / Night / Light mode - Different color profiles are now available in Tails.
  • Tails Screenshotting - Taking screenshots is now much easier in Tails
Improvements in Tails Wallet Bitcoin / Litecoin / Monero support

The Tails Wallet team has not been sitting idle. At the same time Tails OS is improving so is Tails Wallet. The following improvements have occurred:

  • Tails Bitcoin Wallet - Improvements in fee handling to ensure the lowest fee is always selected.
  • Tails Litecoin Wallet - Improved remote node selection that will maximize privacy. By default remote nodes are more sticky. Since your list of wallet addresses has to be shared with the selected remote node it is important to reduce the number of remote nodes used over the lifetiem of a wallet.
  • Tails Monero Wallet - Fee selection has been improved in order to counteract the Monero spam attack. In addition, the Monero churning feature has been improved in order to increase privacy in face of the Monero black marble attack.

Thank you for all the users of Tails Wallet and Tails OS. We have a lot of exciting improvements coming to Tails Wallet in the next months that we hope the community will find useful.

Tails Wallet and Tor Network Onion Routing

We support privacy and your right to privacy. It is one reason why we created a wallet that supports all major privacy coins: Monero, ZCash, and Pirate Chain. Unfortunately, privacy is not as simple as just using one coin over another coin. There is a lot involved -- it is an entire process! For example, let's pretend you are using Monero and you generate a transaction and send this through to a remote node you are connected to for broadcast. That remote node would then know that transaction is associated with your IP address. Sure, they won't know every detail since they won't know who it was sent to or which of the inputs was used to create it is real or decoy. However, they know quite a bit by knowing that your specific IP is the one that generated the transaction. That alone is enough to reduce your privacy!

Luckily, there is a solution to this problem and that is using the Tor Network, so remote nodes never know your IP address. We at Tails Wallet are dedicated to make privacy easier for you to accomplish which is why we created an easy to use wallet that can help you properly utilize coins to exercise your human right to privacy. Tails Wallet protects your IP address from node operators so you always have maximum privacy.

What is the Tor Network and how does it protect privacy?

The Tor Network enables anonmyous access to the internet. It does this through a process called Onion Routing which will route your network traffic through a series of 3 other computer nodes and as a result no node in the series knows who sent the traffic or where the traffic is going. The result is that when you make a connection the computer you are connected to cannot know your real IP address. You can think of it like an advanced VPN.

Tails Wallet has Tor built-in so your privacy is protected at all times by the Tor Network. Going back to our Monero example... If you are using Tails Wallet when you create your Monero transaction the remote node you are connected to cannot know your IP address because Tails Wallet utilizes the Tor Network to anonymize your wallet traffic. The end result is that you gain one more tool to enhance your privacy.

Coin Center: Advocating for Blockchain Privacy

We at Tails Wallet are big freedom and privacy advocates and therefore we like to support others who advocate for privacy and freedom too. Coin Center is one such organization that we recommend everyone add to their donate list. The recent battle that is being fought by Coin Center are the OFAC sanctions against Tornado Cash.

What is Tornado Cash and what are the OFAC sanctions?

Tornado Cash is a decentralized, on-chain smart contract that uses Zero-Knowledge Proofs in order break the links between transactions. The technology is the same used by ZCash and Pirate Chain. Unlike Monero transactions on the Ethereum Blockchain are fully transparent. This means that when Alex sends coins to Tom who sends them to Jessica that Jessica could, if she had enough knowledge, know the coins originated from Alex. This is because each step as the coins move from one person to another is fully transparent and recorded. If a user sends coins first to Tornado Cash, then this linkage between transactions is broken and thus the user gains privacy.

OFAC sanctions are the US Governments attempt to make it illegal for US citizens and residents to interact with this smart contract. The end result is that the US government is attempting to make privacy illegal for US citizens. The non-democratic institution making these sanction rulings is the Office of Foreign Assets Control. The institution asserts by making the sanction rules that it has been granted legal authority by Congress to regulate the interaction that Americans can have with the Tornado Cash smart contract. Coin Center is arguing that the limited regulatory authority granted to OFAC is not sufficient to regulate the smart contract.

Why is this court case important for privacy advocates?

Sanctioning OFAC has had a chilling effect on privacy. Exercising privacy should be something that can be done without worry of reprisal. Many innocent people were using Tornado Cash without any malicious purpose other to retain their human right to privacy. Many of them effectively had their finances affected as their ability to convert Torando Cash linked coins to products and goods was reduced. Any legislation that impacts privacy negatively or discourages privacy should be fought against and since Coin Center is fighting this battle for the benefit of everyone hope people will donate to Coin Center.

Privacy rights cannot be won through technical innovation alone. It also must be one culturally, legally, and politically in each country worldwide.
